Mindestens vier Jagdhunde sind vermutlich bei einer Jagd am Wochenende im Dartmoor getötet worden, nachdem sie auf die Eisenbahnschienen liefen.
Rund 30 Hunde bei der Dartmoor Jagd sollen auf Bahngleise bei einer Jagd gelaufen sein, die zwischen Langham Levels und Fardel Brücke in der Nähe von Ivybridge in Devon am Samstag durchgeführt wurde. Mehrere von ihnen wurden darauf hin von einem vorbeifahrenden Zug getötet, was die Jäger als sehr tragisch und bedauerlich ansahen.
Joint-Master, Tom Lyle dazu:
"Es war sehr ärgerlich für alle Beteiligten", sagte er.
"Manche Hunde liefen einfach auf der Bahnlinie und wurden getötet.
"So etwas ist noch nie auf einer Jagd passiert und es war sehr unangenehm für alle Beteiligten."
Der Vorfall ereignete sich um die Mittagszeit am Samstag.
Network Rail gab an, dass sie von der Polizei gewarnt wurden, dass ein Rudel Jagdhunde ohne Begleitung auf der Bahnstrecke sich befände. Die Eisenbahngesellschaft erhielt dann einen Anruf von einem Lokführer der sagte, dass er die Gegend abgesuht hätte und ihm die Jagdhundmeute aufgefallen wäre. Er berichtete, dass sein Zug sechs von ihnen erfasste, die als Folge ihrer Verletzungen starben.
Anti-Jagd-Aktivisten, wurden bereits auf den Vorfall aufmerksam und forderten von den Jägern mehr Verantwortlichkeit.
Der Sprecher der Executive League Against Cruel Sports, Joe Duckworth, sagte, dass so etwas kein Einzelfall unter Jägern sei, und dass die Missachtung der Jäger ihren Jagdhunden gegenüber durchaus typisch sei. Es gab auch schon in der Vergangenheit Verkehrsunfälle und den Tod von anderen Tieren, darunter Hunden und Katzen, durch außer Kontrolle geratene Jagdhunde.
Der Vorfall am Samstag wirft mehrere Fragen auf. Warum fand die Jagd so nahe an der Bahnlinie statt und warum gerieten die Hunde so außer Kontrolle, dass ein solch tragischer Unfall stattfinden konnte?
"Die traurige Tatsache ist, dass wenn es diese Jagd nicht gegeben hätte, die sechs Hunde noch leben würden, sodass die Jäger dafür zur Rechenschaft gezogen werden sollten.

Hunt horror as hounds are killed after being hit by train near IvybridgeAt least four hounds are believed to have been killed after running onto railway tracks during a weekend hunt, the Western Morning News has learned.
Around 30 hounds belonging to the Dartmoor Hunt are said to have run onto the tracks unaccompanied between Langham Levels and Fardel Bridge near Ivybridge in Devon on Saturday.
Several were then hit by a passing train in what members of the hunt have called a "distressing and regrettable” incident.
Joint-master, Tom Lyle, said nothing like it had ever happened to the Dartmoor hunt before.
"I was very upsetting to all involved,” he said.
"Some hounds ran onto the railway line and were killed.
"Nothing like this has ever happened to the hunt before and it was very upsetting to all involved.”
The incident occurred at around midday on Saturday.
Network Rail said they were contacted by the police around to alert them that a pack of hunting hounts were unaccompanied on the line.
The rail company then received a call from a train driver to say that he had gone through the area and had noticed the pack of hounds. He reported that his train had struck six of them, who died as a result of their injuries.
Anti-hunting campaigners, have already responded to the incident by calling for greater accountability in the sport.
Chief executive of the League Against Cruel Sport, Joe Duckworth, said it was "not an isolated case” and that it was "typical of the disregard that hunts show for their hounds and the public”.
"Accidents in the past have involved road traffic collisions, other train accidents and the deaths of other animals, including pet dogs and cats caused by out of control hunt hounds,” he said.
"Saturday's incident begs several questions. Why was the hunt out hunting in such close proximity to the railway line in the first place and why were the hounds so out of control that such a tragic accident was allowed to take place?
"The sad fact remains, if the hunt's actions had of been different six dogs would still be alive and its members should be held accountable.”
